A PDF, or Portable Document Format, is an open standard for file exchange. The file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 is used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system. This means that, when a file, such as a Word document or PowerPoint presentation, is created as a PDF document, all of its original qualities are maintained regardless of what the viewer's computer is capable of showing including fonts, colors, and shapes.

Users on Parish workstations can use the CutePDF writer to create PDF documents for free.
